Local Carlow man Brian Doyle along with the help of Carlow Car Club set about raising some much needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland recently. The fundraiser was the brainchild of Brian Doyle who with the full support of the car club decided to run the fundraiser in conjunction with the annual Carlow Stages Rally, the fundraiser kicked off at the launch of the stages rally with a monster raffle taking place with over 60 prizes on offer all kindly donated by local people and businesses, next up was an outing in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre and another in the McDonough Junction in Kilkenny at which there were some rallycars filled with balloons on display and people were asked to guess the correct amount. Over 200 sponsor cards were distributed out to the club members; the club also donated all proceeds generated from the sale of the rally programmes on the weekend of the rally to this worthy cause. In all a grand total of €10,585 was raised and it was with great pleasure that this cheque was presented to the CEO of the CF Association at a presentation night in the Lord Bagenal Hotel recently, there was a great attendance on the night with the musical entertainment supplied by The Works free of charge and a special guest appearance by local band Free Fallen Angels. The money raised will go towards the new purpose built CF patient units in Crumlin Hospital. A big thank you to all who supported this very worthy cause and a big congratulations to Brian and his team for their dedication, hard work and commitment to making this fundraiser such a success.

C.C.L.W.B. Marshals Training Day And Summer Draw
Saturday the 23rd of May will see the five participating Motor Clubs that form the C.C.L.W.B Marshals hold their first summer draw. The draw signifies the first social event of the newly formed group and will be held in the Kilford Arms Hotel, Kilkenny City at 7.30 pm.
At the beginning of the 2009 motorsport season the:
Carlow Car Club
Carrick on Suir Motor Club
Laois Rallysport Club
Wexford Motor Club
Birr and District Motor Club
Launched a new initiative to recognize and reward the valuable work carried out by members who marshal on events promoted by the above clubs. With this in mind a committee was appointed and to get the venture off the ground each club provided €500. The committee then proposed to design a car sticker in the shape of a marshal’s bib, this sticker would be used as the primary tool for raising funds and would be aimed at competitors during documentation sign on as it’s the Competitors who reap the benefits of the marshals work out on the stages. All the moneys collected would used to supply prizes for two yearly draws for marshals that are signed up members of the five clubs. A marshal would gain entry into the draws each time they marshal on an event.
Now as we come to the half point in the season it’s time for our first draw of the year. To date there as been six events at which the new initiative has been introduced and the reaction from the crews has been overwhelming in favour of the scheme. In recognition of how most of the funds have been raised the committee has decided to organise a marshal’s training day to run in conjunction with the summer draw. The training day will serve as a way to refresh the knowledge of current marshals and show marshals all aspects of how a special stage is setup and run. The training day will also be used as a fire extinguisher training day which has been sponsored by Motorsport Ireland.
The Marshals Training day will be held at the Callan, car boot sale venue Co. Kilkenny.
Geographical Coordinates to Venue: N 52˚ 26.906W17˚ 17.657
Training day Schedule: The training day will start on Saturday morning the 23rd of May at 10.30am. There will be a full special stage setup with tuition from where the rallycar leaves Parc Ferme to Start Arrival Control, Stage Start, Flying Finish and Finish Control. There will also be tuition with the timing systems and the correct use of radios when the special stage is live. The fire extinguisher training will be broken into two sessions’ morning and afternoon with indoor tuition plus DVDs and outdoor tuition and practical training.
On Saturday evening the attention then moves to the Kilford Arms Hotel when a meal will be laid on and the draw will take place. Prizes include a day at a rally school, a co driving seat in a WRC rallycar on a test day, vouchers for rally clothing plus many other prizes and the main prize a Trip to a WRC Event.

Carlow Car Club, Laois Rallysport Club, Wexford Motor Club and Carrick on Suir Motor Club will launch a new initiative next weekend at the Tipperary Sean Conlon Forestry Rally for Marshals who are members of the four Clubs. The four Clubs have come together to form the C.C.L.W. Motor Clubs. The C.C.L.W. Motor Clubs has been setup within the four clubs to recognize and repay the valuable work carried out by their marshals on events throughout the motorsport season. Starting from next weekends Sean Conlon Forestry Rally, the first round of the 2009 National Forestry Championship and the first round of the 2009 South East Stages Championship marshals from the above named clubs who sign-on to work on that event and following events will be entered into draws to be held twice per year to reward them for their efforts.
During a monthly meeting in October 2008 of the Carrick on Suir Motor Club, the subject of providing enough marshals to cover club events was raised. The Carrick club has in the region of 200 members but during the clubs Mini Stages Rally in September there was a shortage of Marshals to cover the two-stage event. Differing views were expressed on why there was a shortage of marshals but the general consensus was the lack of respect and poor treatment toward marshals on events. Club member Billy Collins then put forward the idea of joining forces with neighbouring clubs in the southeast area and pool our resources for events organized by the clubs involved. At this point Billy Collins, Jim Brawders and Barry Duggan were appointed to make contact with the following clubs:
And setup a meeting to hear the opinions on forming a body within the respective clubs to regulate and then reward marshals for working on events through the motorsport season. After a succession of meetings the C.C.L.W. Motor Clubs has now been formed. The aim of the C.C.L.W. Motor Clubs is to reward marshals from the involved clubs for their hard work on events by holding two draws per year with prizes ranging from trips to WRC events, a day at a rally school, a co driving seat in a WRC rallycar on a test day, vouchers for rally clothing and many other prizes.
The Clubs concerned have appointed a committee to organize this new venture. They consist of Billy Collins (Carrick) as Chairman, Jim Crowe (Carlow) as Treasurer and Theresa Stafford (Wexford) as Secretary. At this point the Tipperary and Birr clubs have opted out of the project but it is the hope of the committee that they will rejoin. In addition to the committee two club contacts have also been appointed. They are; from Carlow Jim Crowe and Chris Nugent, from Carrick Billy Collins and Jim Brawders, from Laois Tim Conroy and Kieran Reid and from Wexford Theresa Stafford and Pat O’Dowd.
To get this new initiative off the ground the four clubs have provided €500 per club to start a fund. 100% of the money in this fund will be used to supply prizes for two draws per year. The committee have also designed a sticker in the shape of marshals bib which will be on sale for €10 at events organized and promoted by the four motor clubs. This sticker will be aimed at competitors during documentation sign on, as it’s the competitors who reap the benefit of the marshal’s hard work out on the stages. Each of the four clubs has their own colour sticker,
To qualify for eligibility for the draws Marshals Must:
1. Each Marshal must be over eighteen years old. 2. Each Marshal must be a paid up member of one of the four participating clubs. 3. Each Marshal must have signed the official Motorsport Ireland event sheet. 4. Each Marshal must have signed the club contact sign on sheet for each event. 5. Each Marshal must sign a ticket and return the ticket to their club contact on the day.

21 year old Paul Grogan from Rathcrogue, Co.Carlow has been selected
Dunlop Young Racing Driver of the Month for September.
Paul’s achievement is all the more
noteworthy because of his main motorsport involvement as a Timekeeper
and as a Rallycross competitor of some note, having come second overall
in the most recent Rallycross Championship Series.
Recently he turned his hand to a Global Light Sportscar and put in a
very creditable performance at his first outing, finishing 7th and 8th
overall in a field of 20 Sportscars at the Carlow Race Meeting at
Mondello on 28th September.
Delighted to
be nominated as Driver of the Month for September, Paul expressed his
appreciation for all his sponsors throughout the year, namely Milltown
Engineering, Mondello Park Ltd., Access Solutions and the Bunclody
Motors Ltd. Rallycross Team – all of whom have helped with his
success.
Paul is the sixth and final
Dunlop Driver of the Month for 2008, and is now a contender for the
prestigious Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year
Award, the total prize fund of which is €50,000. This award is
presented annually and is sponsored by Irish Dunlop Ltd. with
additional support from the Irish Sports Council and Motorsport
Ireland.
The points table has now been updated for the Carlow Car Club Members Championship and can be downloaded from the results section of the downloads page.

Francis Kelly - Carlow Sports Person of the Year Nominee
Francis Kelly was nominated as one of Carlow's Sports People of the Year for 2007. The event supported by Beat 102 103 and the Talbot Hotel Carlow recognised Francis's efforts in winning the South East Stages Rally Championship Overall Title.
An emergency
meeting of the members of Carlow Car Club was held on Tuesday evening, February
12th, 2008 – over 100 members attended. The members of the club who met with the
Motorsport Ireland Rallies Committee gave a full report of their meeting and a
copy of the reply from the Motorsport Ireland Rallies Committee was read out.
A
full and open discussion took place. The
club members decided to reluctantly accept the decision from Motorsport Ireland that
the club will have no rally in 2008. The
club would work with the Motorsport Ireland Rallies Committee to secure our
date for 2009. The club would ensure
that the 2009 event would be run to an even higher standard than the excellent
event that was run in 2007.
Regrettably
this means that there will be no Escort Mk II Challenge in 2008 – but it will
be back bigger and better in 2009.
The
above was unanimously agreed by all the members and the club will run the 12
other events listed in the 2008 calendar and expect full support from all.
An emergency club meeting has been arranged for
Tuesday 12th February at 9pm in Leighlinbridge Parish Hall (beside the church) to
discuss the recent meeting the club directors had with the rallies
committee.
Carlow Car Club received correspondence from the Motorsport Ireland Rallies Committee in late November to say that no permit would be given to run the 2008 Stages Rally. The reasons given were because of issues contained in the Motorsport Ireland Stewards' and Safety Officer's reports. The Directors of Carlow Car Club met and have entered into correspondence with the Rallies Committee. It is generally accepted by all that the 2007 Stages Rally was a safe and well run event and the Directors were very surprised by the Rallies Committee's decision. We have asked to meet with the Rallies Committee at the earliest opportunity to try and resolve this matter and reinstate the 2008 Stages Rally back on this year's calendar.

Carlow Car Club members Colin O'Toole, Tullow and Jenny Ryan, Athy have recently been awarded funding to the value of E2,000 each from their club. The club was formed over 40 years ago and it still has some founding members on the panel including the clubs President Fintan O'Neill and vice-President Joe Shirley. The Carlow Club is one of the largest of its kind in Ireland with over 250 members, 200 which are competing members and the remainder are volunteers and officials at motorsport events throughout the country and further a field. This is the first time the club has made a financial contribution to its competing members and it stems from the recent success of competing members being short listed for the Sexton Young Racing Driver of the Year Award and the Billy Coleman Young Rally Driver of the Year Award.
Tullow's, Colin O'Toole captured the 2005 West Coast Junior Championship in his first full year of rallying, and earlier this year launched his attack on the 2006 Dunlop National Stages Championship. Driving in class 11, one of the most competitive classes which caters for 1600 16valve modified cars, Colin started the year in the Circuit of Kerry Stages Rally. After settling into the car, which was being powered by a new engineand back by J&J Services, Tullow , he finished 2nd in the championship, a good result after a long weekend. Next up was the Carlow Stages Rally, where Colin was out to impress on his local roads. Impress he did, with a class victory and a stunning 16th overall, which moved him to second in the championship. In the following round in Cavan mechanical gremlins struck on the morning stages, dropping him back to 9th in class. Some grit, determination and fast driving, saw him move up to 3rd. With the next round in Sligo looming, Colin now leads the championship class on dropped scores. Colin would like to thank Carlow Car Club for their help and support as he battles it out with the top drivers in the country.
Meanwhile, Athy's Jenny Ryan made her mark on the male dominated sport of circuit racing with a number of history making achievements in 2004/5. Her success in the Dunlop Punto Championship entered her in the history books when she became the first ever woman to win a national motor racing championship. Scoring five race wins en route to this impressive result she also became the first female to be short listed for the prestigious Irish Sports Council back Young Racing Driver of the Year Award. This year Jenny, undoubtedly Ireland's top female racing driver, headed over seas to compete in the BMW mini Cooper Championship having signed with leading tem Mark Fish Motorsport and is currently enjoying some good results amoungst grids of upto 30 cars. To date she has qualified on the front row of the grid, had a podium finish in Castle Combe earlier this month while being the first lady to do so within the Championship and has broken the Mini Cooper lap record in Pembrey in May. Jenny had hoped this would be the perfect progression to get one step closer to her goal of racing in the British Touring Car Championship but with no main sponsor on board outside family support she fears her racing career overseas may come to a premature end at the end of season should she be unsuccessful in securing a main sponsor. Despite this she is looking forward to heading to the famous Grand Prix Spa Francorchamps Racing Circuit in October for one of her end of season championship rounds. Jenny is also gratful to the Club for their valued support.

Not a bad day at the office for Carlow Car Club Members Jennifer Ryan & Stephen Murphy at their respective events.
Jennifer Ryan is racing in the English John Cooper Challenge this weekend and showed that she was a deserving nominee last year for the Young Racing Driver of the Year award. Jennifer fought off the efforts of no less than 21 other similar Mini's to leave her 10th on a grid of 31 for her race tomorrow at Brands Hatch which kicks off at 2.00pm. Jennifer and her team Mark Fish Motorsport were delighted with the grid position and are now focusing on the job in hand tomorrow.
More closer to home Stephen Murphy is out on Round 3 of the Pirelli Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, the very famous Rally of the Lakes. This is Stephen's first outing this year and his first outing since he took a walk over victory on the Dick Bailey Stages Rally in Wexford last September. If that was not enough he is also settling into a brand new car with very little testing which he is hiring from Noel Redmond Motorsport. After Stage 9 Stephen is lying a very creditable 5th overall which is a superb position to be in going into day 2.
Best of luck to both Stephen and Jennifer for tomorrow.
The website gallery has just been updated with photos by Nuala Grogan from the Carlow Photographic Society of the Clubs very first closed autotest which was run in conjunction with the GRT Hire / Jondol Furniture Collection Carlow Car Club Members Championship. The event prooved to be very successful but unfortunatly the cars that were used did not feel the same way by the days end!!
